Kusamochi—Rice Dumplings Flavored with a Herb
by Nawo Iwasa
tr. Tomoyuki Endo
What a good smell, I thought.
Two rice dumplings flavored with a herb,
I found them left on the table.
Before I got to eat them, my head fell down on the table,
and I fell asleep.
There must have been a sleeping pill mixed in my meal.
Every time I have a meal, I get so sleepy
that I fall into a dead sleep.
In my dreams,
I get killed in a blurred, relaxed mood,
buried not in the field of herbs,
but wrapped in a rice dumpling as sweet stuffing.
I knew I was going to be such stuffing some time.
Some spirit came up to me and woke me up,
and then I found the rice dumplings stuck with each other
on the same table,
and were lonely, dry.
Poor dry skin.
I rescued them onto my paper napkin,
blew on the skin, and smelled them.
What a good smell, the smell of life!
They looked so cute I first left my toothmark on them,
and no doubt, ate them.

- Kusamochi is a Japanese rice dumpling flavored with mugwort with sweet bean paste stuffing in it.
